The Donna Kay is a shrimper/tug boat that ran aground near the tip of Cape San Blas, on the western side, in October 2018. Apparently her captain fell asleep at the wheel. There she remained for a few weeks, awaiting salvage. However, Mother Nature had other plans. Hurricane Michael—the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the contiguous United States since Andrew in 1992 and the first Category 5 hurricane on record to impact the Florida Panhandle— carried her further ashore and made salvage impractical. The Donna Kay has become something of a mecca for beachgoers, who hike the miles long walk along the beach in Cape San Blas to take photos and admire the unusual sight. And that’s exactly what my friend, Charles Gattis, and I did!
